In 2002 Thomas Luthi debuted in the World Championship although 2003 was his first full season. In 2005 he emerged as one of the strongest pilots and ended up getting the 125cc title after adding four victories and eight podiums. After an attempt to revalidate the title, although frustrated from his injuries, Luthi leaped to 250cc in 2007.

He debuted on the podium in 2008, in its second season in the category. Fourth in the first Moto2 World Championship in 2010, the Swiss got his first victory in the category in the Malaysian GP 2011. The Swiss pilot, one of the most veteran of the intermediate category, made his best achievement in 2016 when he finished the championship in second position.

In 2017 he fought for the title until the penultimate race of the World Cup in Malaysia, where a fall in the qualifying round unabled him from fighting in the race. In 2018 he makes his MotoGP debut with the Estrella Galicia 0,0-Marc VDS team.
